Ben Allen, PE, has moved to Wilson & Company’s Kansas City office, bringing with him 16 years of structural design, construction engineering, and construction management experience. He has strong ties to the BNSF Structures Department in Kansas City, having worked both as a design consultant and railroad representative working with public agencies.
“Ben’s expertise in the design of highway and rail structures will greatly enhance the structural design capabilities of our Kansas City office,” said Troy Eisenbraun, Senior Vice President. “Adding Ben to our team in Kansas City allows us to better serve our state and local agency clients.”
Ben has completed structural design of bridges, walls, and other transportation-related structures for Class I freight rail, highway, and roadway projects. His construction engineering experience includes designing falsework and excavating shoring, and preparing girder erection plans. He understands railroad requirements when working with public agencies, including
- Coordinating with Class I railroads, state, and local agencies, and private entities with infrastructure within railroad right of way for structural and hydraulic design requirements.
- Incorporating trails at railroad grade separations crossings.
- Designing and reviewing railroad grade separations on behalf of BNSF in accordance with the BNSF Guidelines for Railroad Grade Separation Projects.
- Conducting construction management, inspection, and coordination services for BNSF railroad bridges and bridges for public projects on BNSF right of way.
In addition to his extensive knowledge of Class I railroad standards, Ben has completed structural design on highway and roadway projects using the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) guidelines. For CDOT Region 1, he completed structural design on the award-winning CMGC Pecos Street over I-70 Bridge Replacement project including type selection, transverse design of post-tensioned, variable width, and curved cast-in-place box girders. As part of a multi-discipline team, he collaborated with the City and County of Denver for the Central Park Boulevard Interchange design-build project, where he completed superstructure design for two 3-span, high skew precast bulb tee girder ramp bridges. Displaying his discipline and intensity, Ben completed structural design and construction engineering for Bijou Street over UPRR and Monument Creek for the Colorado Springs Metro Interstate Expansion design-build project. He was responsible for superstructure design of a 4-span precast, pre- and post-tensioned, variable width concrete u-girder.

Ben has a bachelor’s in civil engineering and a master’s in structural engineering from the University of Colorado, and is a registered professional engineer. He is a member of American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
In his spare time, Ben enjoys riding his bike, gardening, and drinking beer.
