When the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway
Company decided to build an auto facility near Argentine Yard, Hanson-Wilson
Inc. provided design and construction management of this 30-acre
facility used in serving Ford.
This project was a new facility with four 1,300 ft unloading tracks.
These tracks are located on an existing rail spur, which had to
be inspected and inventoried to determine if added traffic could
be handled. The geometry of turnouts and layout were checked to
ensure that the long tri-level cars could be used to serve the new
automotive distribution facility. The facility was paved and the
tracks were elevated to ensure proper drainage.
A
2,400 s.f. office building was constructed for the operation of
quality control, the unloading contractor and the haul-away contractor.
The site is surrounded by a 10 ft high fence with motion-detection
devices. To ensure proper security along with the motion detection
devices, high mast lighting, video cameras and an access control
system were designed and installed. Due to the existing soil conditions,
Hanson-Wilson designed a special subgrade stabilization consisting
of a geo-textile with quarry fines.
In 1997-1998 the yard was expanded to accommodate Chrysler. The
addition involved 200 car spaces and eight truck spaces with security
fencing, retaining walls, asphalt and concrete pavement and high
mast lighting.
