The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company
(BNSF) Los Angeles Auto-Veyor Yard expansion project is necessitated
by new car manufacturer contracts for vehicles to be shipped from
this yard. The existing facility located on Eastern Avenue in the
city of Commerce provides storage for new car deliveries as well as
buy-back cars from leasing companies. The additional new car contracts
will require all of the space currently utilized by the existing buy-back
spaces.
Therefore, the buy-back area is being relocated to the proposed expansion
lot covered by the new construction. The proposed lot actually contains
two parcels of land, one previously owned by BNSF, which is currently
used for trailer storage/repair, and the other recently-purchased
parcel that currently has stockpiled material located on it.
This project is divided into three phases of work.
- Phase 1: Demolition and removal of the existing improvements
from the proposed site including the existing perimeter fence.
Temporary fencing will be required for the duration of the project
for the locomotive storage area east of the property as well as
the nursery lease operator on the west property line.
- Phase 2: After all expansion lot work is complete and the new
lot is in operation, Phase 2 will begin. At that time, the contractor
will be required to complete the transition of the existing buy-back
lot to additional new car storage. This work will require the
close coordination with BNSF and their operation's vendor for
this facility. The contractor will be required to work only during
the time windows and/or conditions set by BNSF and their vendor
for all of the Phase 2 work.
- Phase 3: Offsite work will include drainage remediation along
the Los Angeles Junction Railway (LAJ) property to the south of
the project. This work includes grading and drainage improvements.
This work will require coordination with LAJ and Southern California
Edison.
