Located between the rapidly growing western suburbs
of Aurora and Naperville, IL, the Route 59 Station is the busiest
commuter rail station in Metra's system. Even at 3,000 spaces, the
station's parking capacity was insufficient. Therefore, Metra initiated
and funded a project to double parking availability at the station.
A new surface lot was constructed on approximately 5 acres on the
station's south side. The soils there contained high organic content,
and retained moisture. The plans included undercutting a significant
portion of the existing subgrade and replacing it with stone. The
improvements included a bituminous concrete pavement, curb and gutter,
a closed drainage system, lighting and landscaping.
Hanson-Wilson Inc. (HWI) performed field surveys, coordinated with
the City of Aurora to meet their building code, and prepared construction
documents. HWI also provided plans for grading, paving, erosion
control, drainage (storm sewer), pavement marking, landscaping,
parking lot lighting and electrical systems.
Because of this project, the station's parking capacity was increased
by approximately 125 percent - adding 3,700 new parking spaces.
After it was completed, the new lot was turned over to the City
of Aurora.
