Running Repair Facility Addition
Barstow, California

General Electric (GE) operates this facility for the railroad. Considerable coordination was required among Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF), GE and the Hanson-Wilson Inc. (HWI) design team. This project nearly doubled the existing running repair facility, which provides light locomotive repair.

The expansion included lengthening the maintenance tracks and access platforms in the building. A new inbound platform was added for locomotives waiting repair. The inbound platform was equipped with direct fixated rail.

The dispensing systems for fuel, lube oil, compressor oil, water and journal oil were extended to serve the expanded facility. The inbound platform is connected to the industrial drain system through a new collection manhole and pump station. New double-contained underground supply lines and leak detection manholes were installed for diesel fuel.

This project required considerable coordination to complete construction without interrupting the operations of the facility. Yard tracks and by-pass tracks were designed and constructed while maintaining continuous yard activity by working closely with BNSF staff and coordinating critical connections to existing track-work. Diesel piping modifications were accomplished without service interruptions to the Diesel Service Facility.
