South 9th Street Improvements - Phase II & III
Salina, Kansas
"Traffic Volumes and Multiple Businesses Pose Challenge"
ACEC Award Category: Transportation
Phase III portion of South 9th Street in Salina won APWA Transportation Project of the Year in the projects of $2 million to $10 million division).
Excellence in Paving Award from the MO/KS Chapter of the American Concrete Paving Association

The South 9th Street corridor is a major arterial that has quickly become Salina's largest and busiest commercial corridor. The ½ mile project was to be reconstructed while maintaining two-way traffic on South 9th Street throughout the entire duration of the project. This South 9th Street corridor has traffic volumes in excess of 20,000 vehicles per day. These volumes, combined with the number of commercial businesses that derive their only access from 9th Street, made this project one of the most challenging projects that Salina has ever encountered. These facts magnified the need for extensive public information efforts. Wilson & Company, along with City of Salina staff, conducted a public project kickoff meeting discussing project scope, project limits, construction phasing, and access.

The new roadway consists of a full depth 9 ½" concrete pavement urban four lane curb and guttered arterial with a unique combination of underground storm sewer and concrete lined ditches. New lighting, traffic signals, brick pavers, trees, shrubs, and grass areas also highlight this exciting project.
