UNMH Women’s Primary Care Clinic, Albuquerque, NM

Establishing a strategic plan in 2009, University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) determined that to keep pace with the growing population and ability to provide primary care services, additional clinics would be necessary. The UNMH Women’s Primary Care Clinic is the fourth of five new properties built to serve surrounding communities.

Within an existing structure, Wilson & Company provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design of new, energy efficient, replacement systems for the 23,000 sf renovation project. The clinic consists of several units including gynecology, urogynecology, midwifery, blood draw, ultrasound, maternal-fetal medicine, triage and research areas, as well as supporting spaces such as exam spaces, procedure rooms, waiting areas, restrooms, soiled/clean holding, and housekeeping areas.

Electrical design included power distribution and lighting, as well as fire alarm, nurse call, intercom/paging, security access, and telecommunications systems.

Mechanical design included variable-refrigerant flow systems, coupled with energy recovery ventilation, and supplemental high-efficiency rooftop units.

Plumbing design included sewer, condensate, natural gas, medical gases, domestic water, and roof drains.

Fire protection design consisted of appropriate zoning and requirements.

Wilson & Company employed a green-minded approach to mechanical and electrical design. This included high-efficiency mechanical equipment with heat recovery systems, increased outdoor air ventilation to improve air quality, low-water use and dual-flush plumbing fixtures, LED lighting with occupancy sensors, and daylighting considerations. This project is targeted for LEED Silver certification.
