The City of Casa Grande's Woonerf or "Living Street"

What is a woonerf?!?!

Woonerf—a safer street for your kids to play in. “Woonerf”, loosely translated as “living street,” is a popular Dutch and European design that allows vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists to share space.

The City of Casa Grande is proving that you don’t have to be a big city to implement this European design. Wilson & Company Project Manager, Alan Ferreira is working with the City of Casa Grande’s Project Manager, Duane Eitel, to design 5th Street in downtown Casa Grande based off the woonerf concept. Duane observed the concept while studying in Europe, and Wilson & Company jumped on board to design something not only somewhat foreign to the U.S., but foreign to the urban sprawl common in the Phoenix region. The design will active key transportation connection and create an interactive space between Peart Park and the Main Library, and will provide a unique gathering place in Casa Grande’s popular downtown.
