Otero County constructed the Timberon Volunteer Fire Department’s facility in the early 1980s to support the growing community. Since then, the department and community have depended upon a three-bay fire station, serving about 350 residents.

After almost 40 years of service, the existing fire station foundation failed and needed costly repairs. Wilson & Company designed a new fire station under the county’s on-call contract. Several challenges developed during the design process, and the team’s lead architect, Michael Wright, AIA, NCARB, facilitated the development of a new plan and schedule. With tenacity and care for the project’s success, he coordinated with the county to deliver a high-quality project on a site with poor soil conditions and in a remote location.

The community has constructed the 6,360-sq.-ft. building to include four apparatus bays, two offices, a break area, and the required support facilities. Substantial completion was achieved in 2022, and the facility is in use by the Village of Timberon.

This essential facility was designed for the community’s safety and resources, demonstrating team commitment to solving challenges that arose.
