The Utah Department of Transportation's (UDOT) $70 million design-build project included a complete reconstruction of two miles of arterial roadway, a new Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) with I-15 and associated improvements to the interstate highway, and two other major bridge structures. Wilson & Company completed the entire design in less than seven months serving as the designer on a team with Utah County Constructors. We responded quickly and effectively to project challenges such as the horizontal shifting of a few abutment piles at the SPUI. These piles were beyond the allowable tolerance and in jeopardy of being rejected and critically affecting the project's fast-track schedule and budget. We worked closely with the contractor to redesign a wider abutment to fit around the misaligned piles while construction work continued on the remaining the pile driving. This field design change allowed the contractor to stay on schedule and minimized the construction cost increase while meeting the original contract requirements.
