Travis Schafer, PE, has joined Wilson & Company’s Omaha office, bringing with him eight years of experience in railroad-focused, structural engineering. While providing sound technical, cost-effective, and safe structural solutions, he has developed fantastic relationships with BNSF, Union Pacific, Genesee & Wyoming, and Kansas City Terminal Railway, as well as multiple contractors in the rail industry.
“We are very excited to have Travis with Wilson & Company, ” said David Olson, Associate Vice President. “His bridge expertise and relationships with UPRR and BNSF will help to grow our market share and bolster our reputation as a world-class provider of railroad engineering services.”
Travis’s structural design, analysis, and construction observation experience include culverts, bridges, temporary structures, and supplemental structures subject to railroad loading. His bridge experience includes prestressed concrete and steel superstructures; driven pile and drilled shaft substructures.
“I’ve really enjoyed the challenges associated with Rail Bridge Engineering. The structural proficiency is a very important part of the design process, but there are so many other factors that impact the best design solution for the client,” says Travis. “Finding those best solutions is one of the most exciting parts of the work we get to do here at Wilson & Company.”
In addition to Travis’s extensive structural design knowledge, he has completed third-party design evaluations that impact railroad right-of-way. This experience includes reviewing and verifying a structure’s conformance to AREMA guidelines and ensuring he represents the interests of his client in a publicly funded rail bridge project. He also has completed field investigations and assessments of structural integrity and service life of existing structures.
“One of the most satisfying projects I completed was providing construction engineering for the demolition of a 125-year-old, 338’ deck truss that had to be cut and partially demolished in place prior to lowering the structure to the ground,” says Travis.
“It’s great to have young talent, like Travis, joining Wilson & Company,” said Andrew Leifheit, Vice President & Division Manager - Rail Services. “Travis brings fresh ideas and energy to our structures group and I’m looking forward to seeing him succeed.”
Travis has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in architectural engineering with a structural emphasis from the University of Nebraska and is a professional engineer.
In his spare time, Travis enjoys all sorts of outdoor activities, like sand volleyball, hiking, rock climbing, and snowboarding. He also enjoys spending time with his fiancée, Laura.
