Wilson & Company Lays Groundwork for International Border and I-19 Connection

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Arizona) – May 8, 2020 – After laying the groundwork through transportation planning, Wilson & Company, Inc., Engineers & Architects is providing supplemental surveying, lighting design, and quality assurance to the Ames-Horrocks design-build team as the 18-month construction phase begins on the State Route 189: International Border to Grand Avenue design-build project. This $134 million Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) project will improve mobility and safety along the corridor while bolstering the international trade route between the Mariposa Port of Entry and Interstate 19.

“Wilson & Company was pleased to participate in the development of the Design Concept Report for the SR 189 corridor in Nogales, Arizona,” said Associate Vice President and Southwest Transportation Planning Manager Dan Marum. “The Traffic Analysis and Change of Access Reports that were prepared by Wilson & Company included recommended improvement strategies that will allow for improved travel and mobility for all users of the corridor along with a significant upgrade to the SR 189/I-19 Traffic Interchange. The construction of new ramps providing a direct connection to the freeway will allow for seamless access to Interstate 19, thus minimizing the need for commercial vehicle stops. The positive impact from the construction of the recommended improvements will enhance Arizona’s image internationally and facilitate the transport of commercial goods to produce related warehouse sites in Santa Cruz County and other key destinations throughout Arizona.”

Wilson & Company has provided multi-modal corridor planning and traffic analyses to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for the SR 189 corridor since 2011. Through our conduct of the Design Concept Report (DCR), Wilson & Company helped develop and evaluate strategies that would minimize the need for commercial vehicle stops in the corridor.

Construction began in April to widen 3 miles of SR 189 from just north of the Mariposa Port of Entry to the intersection with Grand Avenue. The design-build project includes a new roundabout, new flyover ramps, drainage improvements, and new traffic signals.
