Pecos Street Bridge over I-70

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) hired Wilson & Company to design the replacement of the Pecos Street bridge over I-70 in Denver, as part of FASTER legislation to address poor condition bridges across Colorado. It took one field visit with CDOT to the site, watching traffic navigate the existing interchange, to determine that traffic improvements were also necessary. Wilson & Company worked closely with CDOT to identify several options to improve traffic flow, eventually recommending modern roundabout intersections to increase safety while minimizing impacts to the surrounding community and businesses.

Two key decisions were made shortly after by CDOT and Wilson & Company:

  1. To minimize impacts to users of I-70, Wilson & Company designed the bridge replacement utilizing accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques. The bridge is being constructed outside of the normal work area in a temporary location. Over a 50-hour period, the Contractor will demolish the existing bridge and move the new bridge from the temporary location to the final location using self propelled modular transport vehicles (SPMT).  This is the first bridge design and construction utilizing this method for CDOT.
  2. The ABC design and construction is very complex, so CDOT and Wilson & Company decided to select the Contractor, Kiewit Infrastructure, through a contract process called Construction Manager / General Contractor (CM/GC). Kiewit and Wilson & Company worked closely through the final design process, continuing the relationship during construction, to ensure the design meets the increased demands of this ABC technique.
